The Sheltered Being

2016 — The Sheltered Being. The Living Room Series Residency, Toronto, ON

The search for the original shell! This piece was fostered by The Living Room Series Residency in partnership with Jamee Valin of Valence Movement (Dance Theatre). The Sheltered Being is a self-directed solo work trying to capture the moment where she is indeed herself.

The Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard was an inspirational force for this work, looking at intimate places and the experiences they create for us. The Sheltered Being is a study of the common space of corners, two walls meeting, where both solitude and shadows are ample. The body is a home for us all.

THE SHELTERED BEING

The body begs for a home,
for an anywhere-but-here without wind or skyfall

Let me count the places where I place myself --
A huddled mass, all starspark and brittlebreath
Conversations with the spider webs

Matchsticks for a daydream

The body is stretched canvas
Folded over upon itself
Left staring at the shell riddled with fault lines that give me my name
